How Does the NeoGraft Hair Transplant Work?

Roughly 80 million Americans experience hair loss. For many of these people, hair loss can have a devastating emotional impact on their daily lives, resulting in lost self-confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, hair restoration procedures are more effective than ever. If you’d like to restore thicker hair, we can help.

At Plastic Surgeons of Lexington, we offer the NeoGraft hair transplant procedure. This minimally invasive treatment doesn’t require the use of scalpels, sutures or staples, and there will be no linear scars. Your recovery time is significantly shorter than with other hair restoration treatments, and you’ll achieve natural looking, long lasting results.

Your NeoGraft Hair Transplant Procedure

NeoGraft uses the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique for your hair transplant. This approach involves removing individual hair follicles from the scalp in groupings of 1-4 hairs. These follicles are then transplanted into regions of the scalp that have started experiencing hair loss. In order to be a good NeoGraft candidate, you must have good hair density in a donor site on the back or sides of your scalp.

Your NeoGraft treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. Prior to your procedure, our plastic surgeons will shave the sides and back of your head. They will then use an automated handheld device to remove healthy hair follicles from the donor region and implant them in the treatment areas. The NeoGraft handheld device ensures that every incision is made exactly the same, ensuring greater precision with the placement of your hair grafts. Depending on the number of grafts required, your procedure can take between 4-8 hours to complete.

Recovery and Results

Recovery after your NeoGraft hair transplant is very mild. You’ll experience small holes and some redness at the extraction sites which will heal rapidly. After one week, they won’t even be noticeable. You may experience minor swelling for the first day or two after your procedure. This can be managed by wearing a bandage.

You should be able to return to work the next day, and all normal activities can be resumed within two days. You’ll need to avoid exercise and other strenuous activity for about two weeks in order to allow the grafts to fully heal.

It’s normal for the implanted hair to shed for two to four weeks after your procedure. After two to three months, you’ll start to grow new hair. Results will gradually improve every week, and it generally takes nine to twelve months for your final results to appear.
